BLUE LOTUS | Shamanic Perfume

Blue Lotus is native to Egypt however it is now believed that Australia was its original birthplace. The plant and flower are very frequently depicted in Ancient Egyptian art. They have been depicted in numerous stone carvings and paintings, including the walls of the temple of Karnak and are associated with rites pertaining to the afterlife. A number of Pharaohs' mummies were covered with the petals of the flower. There are indications it was grown in special farms over 4,000 years ago to produce enough flowers for votive offerings, although it was also grown as an ornamental in traditional Egyptian garden ponds.

Blue Lotus was considered extremely significant in Egyptian mythology, regarded as a symbol of the Sun, since the flowers are closed at night and open again in the morning. At Heliopolis, the origin of the world was taught to have been when the sun god Ra emerged from a Blue Lotus flower growing in ‘primordial waters’. At night, Ra was believed to retreat into the flower again. It was identified as having been the original container, in a similar manner to an egg, of Atum and Ra, both solar deities. As such, its properties form the origin of the ‘lotus variant’ of the Ogdoad Cosmogeny. It was the symbol of the Egyptian deity Nefertem.

Egyptian Blue Lotus is used by Shamans as a spiritual tool for ceremonial grounding and cleansing. Tranquil and peaceful, the aroma of Blue Lotus is also commonly used during ceremony to induce a lucid dreaming state. Use it to promote overall well being and positive energy. It is renowned for its magical effect on the mind, body and soul.

Blue Lotus has a long history of traditional medicinal use and modern research has shown the presence of several medically active compounds in the plant. The plant possesses mildly narcotic properties and its flower water is used in aromatherapy to induce peaceful sleep and vivid dreaming.

The alkaloid Nymphaeine is found in all parts of the plant, other than the seed, whilst Coclaurine has been found in the leaves and stem. The plant contains several flavonoids such as Kaempferols, Quercetins and Myricetins - these are found especially in the flowers. The plant also contains a Glycoside, Nymphalin, which has a digitalis-like action upon the heart.

Alcoholic extracts of the rhizome, containing the alkaloid Nymphaeine, have a mild sedative and spasmolytic action. They do not significantly depress the heart. In large doses they have a paralysing effect on the medulla.

The rhizomes are considered to be astringent, demulcent, diuretic, emollient and tonic. A decoction is given in the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery, stomach ache, colic and dyspepsia.

An infusion of the fresh rhizomes is used for treating blennorrhagia and infections of the urinary tract. The powdered rhizome is used as a demulcent for treating piles. The slightly bitter juice of the leaves and petioles is used in the treatment of gonorrhoea.

The juice from the leaves, or the macerated leaves, are an ingredient of a lotion applied to the skin for fever. The flowers are taken as a cardiotonic because of their astringent properties.

All parts of the plant, except for the seeds, contain the alkaloid Nymphaeine.
