Botanical Name: Acmella oleracea
Native Origin: Peru
The most common and widespread medicinal use is to treat toothache, throat and gum infections. Worldwide the flower heads, leaves and roots are used either fresh or dried and powdered.
The plant is used to cure intestinal infections and rheumatoid arthritis as well as enhance the immune system. It is used against blood parasites, especially against malaria, both as a preventative measure as well as a cure.
The leaves contain aklaloids that promote the secretion of saliva. The leaves, flower heads and roots are analgesic, antiparasitic , antibacterial and antifungal. Candida is also inhibited by its use. Some of the medicinal compounds are destroyed by desiccation or freezing.
Often used as an ornamental due to the unusual and attractive colourful heads. It has recently gained culinary popularity as an ingredient to salads and soups to stimulate the salivary glands whilst having a numbing effect on the tongue and lips.
